Hibernate Non Functional

Even when closing all services, and setting hibernate to
start after 2 minutes, the system doesn't hibernate.

the knowledgbase recommended upgrading directx, but this
didn't help.

I'm running a Sony Viao PCG FX340, with Win XP Home.
 
Have you contacted SONY about it? Laptops are funny things when hibernating.
I have a DELL Inspiron 5000e which crashes on resume from hibernation if I
have a certain vieo driver. Drivers can prevent hibernation. Check each one.
