hibernate fail... any ideas

Suddenly, with no real changes to my system, when I come back from
hibernation, I get a message (can't remember the exact wording) when
it's recovering that there's a problem, and do I want to abort the
hibernation settings and reboot. The only option is to do it, to
choose to continue doesn't work. Then, when it reboots, It stops and
says "Hardware profile configuration recovery menu." There is only one
Profile to choose from, Profile 1, I hit enter, and it continues.
Again, this is the only option that works.

What the hell is going on, and how do I fix it? Thanks!

Oh, I should mention, I tried a system restore to a week or so
earlier, didn't have any effect.

uhhhh... first snag. How do I open the recovery console...?

This may be worse than I thought, if I need to reinstall XP it means
formatting my C drive, because that's the way my recovery disk (from
Sony, came with the system) works. I hope it doesn't come to that
<again>.

You should be able to use someone else's XP install CD to enter the
recovery console.
