hi i have a problem with the packard computer
as i can not get on to windows i keep getting this message please activate
windows when i say yes it says windows is already activated i ve tried the
backup disc with no joy any help as i no nothing about computers with thanks

You need to show windows that it is a legitimate copy.

two most common things that cause this message are: Significant hardware
change, like a new motherboard and 2.) counterfeit/bootleg copy of windows.

In order to activate it, you must have either internet access or a
telephone. If you have internet access, just follow the prompts and do it
online. If you don't, or if it isn't working properly, you have to do the
phone activation with a Microsoft rep.

I just went through this procedure for someone who added a new motherboard,
and it is relatively painless.

If you don't feel like it, or you have a bootleg copy of windows, you will
need to purchase a Windows XP disk. You could probably get by with an
upgrade edition.

Newegg.com has them for like a hundred bucks.

the xp is registered as the label with the details is on the case.

thanks for replying i may have to phone them up. if i can get their number.

Charli,

I had the same issue - it won't take the sticker on the case if it sees
you've changed some vital part like the motherboard. The activation screen
will give you the phone number to call, just choose activate by phone. I
think it took me 10-15 minutes, including hold time, to resolve it. Not bad
at all - I have to give Microsoft credit. Their phone support far exceeds
that of other companies.

When he gets the "It is already activated" screen it does not give a phone number for the
activation.
Do you have that phone number for him?

If he's not getting the screen with the phone number, hes definitely got
himself a bogus copy and just needs to buy one. It definitely should have
"phone activation" as an option.

You need to read the thread from the beginning.
You are making a huge assumption which is probably false.

If the label is on the case, that means you have an OEM.
Many OEMs provide CDs unique to their brand of computer.
How was Windows reinstalled?
Was Windows reinstalled using the original CD that came with that computer?

no there is no phone number given, but if i remember there should be a free
phone# to ring.
i am going round his this afternoon to have a look and try out a couple of
things :)

not so sure as it was installed using the number on the case.
but could it be that it has been repaired just before the reinstall??

pass i dont know but i believe it may be caused by a repair just before
the reinstall. but i do know that it was installed useing the number on the
licence.

Then that is probably your problem.

Near the bottom "View Product Key XP":
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm
Does it show the key affixed to the case?

If not, you may indeed have a pirated copy.

As long as you have the original CD, check the computer manual for reinstall
details.
It may be easier to reinstall with the restore CD if the restore CD does not
have repair options.

Also, see if this applies:
