Hi display question on Windows 2000

Ok, this is on a Windows 2000 system, not a Linux system, but I like to
take my problems to you guys because you are some of the smartest
computer brains around. That's how much I respect you. Right now, things
are running pretty well here, with the exception of the display. The
prior problem, apparently a power problem, seems to be fixed by plugging
it into one of the good sockets. I still have occasional problems, but
the situation is 95% better.

Problem is I have terrible display problems on this system. It is an
Accusync 70 CRT monitor. Frankly, this thing has had serious problems
since I first bought it. The problem is this:

On its default setting, the white background seems too bright for the
black letters and tends to overwhelm them. Typically, after ~2 weeks of
playing around with it, you finally get it to where it works well.
Then when you reinstall Windows, you lose all those settings and have to
do it all over again. This time, it doesn't seem to be cooperating. No
matter where I set it at, it doesn't seem to fix the problem.

I would like to know a few basics:

Are display problems typical with this type of monitor?

Are display problems typical with CRT monitors?

Are those problems readily remedied with flat screen monitors?

To what extent does it have to do with lighting in the background (my
previous problems got a lot better when I switched from 4 60 watt bulbs
to 4 100 watt bulbs)?

Is my problem due to the fact that I have a cheap monitor?

P.S. The problem is the monitor, not the video card.

A quick google search indicates other users aren't particularly
impressed with this monitor either. If this is as you indicate from day
one troubles, back to the store it goes. You indicate that you have
reinstalled windows, is there an inf file for the unit?

Yes I think so.

I suppose, except that I bought it 5 years ago.

Can you recommend a good monitor for a reasonable price?

Also, is this problem I am dealing with called "glare"? Basically, the
white screen seems too white and the typeface does not stand out enough
against the background, which makes it very hard to read.

Yes there is, as a matter of fact, Windows Update had a new driver for
the monitor. From 2002. I just put the correct .icm color profile on; I
hope it helps.

In-line
Can you recommend a good monitor for a reasonable price?

That would depend on what you consider a "reasonable price". I believe
the monitor is one of the "long lived" peripherals, AND the primary user
interface. In other words, don't pinch pennies on it, buy a GOOD monitor
cause you will be looking at it a long time. My method is to pick the
"size" and type monitor and then surf for reviews as to quality,
features and price range. Then look for a vendor you trust to sell it to
you.

Glare is a "reflection" of ambient or external lighting. Anti-glare or
anti-reflection coatings will reduce this. Screens are available to put
in front of the monitor also. Flat screen CRT and Flat-panel monitors
are easier to adjust so the glare won't be an issue. As for the monitor
itself, Brightness, Contrast and "temperature" setting will all have
some effect on the sharpness of white lettering.
