Suddenly all Excel files refuse to open

If I doubleclick on an xls file in Windows Explorer, I am
getting a message
"There was a problem sending the command to the program"

Excel itself opens OK via Start-Programs, yet an attempt
to open a file
using File-Open results in the file shorly flushing on the
screen and then
Excel closes

Same files open well on another computer.

What can I do about it?

Try this:-

Shut Down Excel and then do Start / Run and type in excel.exe /regserver
which will reset all the defaults for Excel in Windows' registry
