Mr so.

Hi
just need some help with a 2 yr old HP running XP ,
I want to format it for a friend ,but I cant seem to get into the Bios so
as to find the boot order[so as it boots from CD 1st]I normally hit Delete
key to get in
I also see it has on "My Computer" a recovery console .can I do away with
that ??as I have my own XP Disk
All I want to do is Format it ,install XP then leave a burnt CD of XP
there for future format's

If the delete key is the key indicated to press during the bootup process,
and it doens't work, then you are screwed. Are you sure it is the delete
key? It could be F1, F5 or almost any other key. When you format the
drive, it will wipe everything from the disk. Unless that "recovery
console" is a hidden partition, and protected. HP is notorious for doing
exactly that.

If halt on all errors is on then you could unplug the floppy reboot and then
you'll get the press f1 to continue or f2 for setup.

Hi:
I have three computers manufactured by hp and all of them
are in good shape.
In regard to format the machine, hp, ... I did it a year
ago when one of machines crashed due to 'unfinished'
software program. At that time, I did clean install by
using recovery disks I got from hp directly through
phone call. Because, I heard that hp machine does not
take XP disk, ... just their own disk,...'recovery disks'
about 8 disks altogether.
This is the most easy and quick way to fix the machine,
in my experience.

Thank you all for replying :)
Kevin you might have misunderstood ...I meant on a normal computer [mine]
I use the delete key
with the HP it doesn't work .
also I want to clean install & get rid of all the crap on my friends PC
..
I've done my own heaps of times ,but the HP acts a bit different

Carl, you mean by unplugging the floppy I can hit F1 &F2
& as Ann says she doesn't think I can use a normal XP disc, that seems a
bit odd but I appreciate what advice you are saying Ann
any follow up please
SOX
ps do I really need the recovery console ?

Hi:
The machine is 'hp pavilion 533w and this/crash happened
a year ago when it was under a warranty.

If you have a question as to 'format' or any other
questions, you may call hp directly. They are VERY
helpful and I got it through without any waiting.
Sometime, you may need to pay a very small 'fee,'around
$2-3, according the problem you have.
However, if your friend's hp is more than one year use,
you may need to pay around $12 - $15 for Recovery Disks
Set, 8 disks altogether. In my case, the Recovery disk-
set came just 2(two) days later after phone call. Almost
next day!
The tele. # is: 1-800-474-6836 or 1-800-572-1959

Restart the computer while it is starting continue to tap the F-11 key to you hear a beep.

HP normally provides for a different method of 'restoring' the system to
ex-factory state. You have to hit the correct key (I think it is F12)
at boot, and that initiates a restore from a hidden partition of the
hard disk. But consult the machine's manual

On my hp keep taping F1 on start up, and it takes you in. The other key to
remember if you want to get into the safe mode etc. is f8. again you must
keep on taping the key on start up. Perhaps on your machine it may be the
f12 key as another person pointed out. You may also want to try
comp.sys.hp.hardware.

How to get into your BIOS depends, not on Windows, but on what
motherboard/BIOS you have. As a matter of fact, you have to
access the BIOS before Windows even starts to boot. One common
way is to press the Del key when you first power on, but although
that's apparently right for your computer, it's not right for
your friend's. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot;
there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not,
check your system documentation or check with your vendor.

Hey thank you all ,
looks like there's no set formula & anywhere from F1 to F12 might get
me in LOL
fun times ahead
Annie I don't think I can get the disks as I'm out of U.S. [Australia}
