When I start up helpctr.exe runs in the background up to 400 times. Also
when I actually get past this and use explorer windows help pops up when I
click a link or try to type in the address bar etc. as its doing now:/

I have tried transmicro sysscan as well as adaware, spybot and avg virus but
these do not fix the problem. I have heard that it was bug with xp? Can
anyone help me ? Short of reformatting I'm lost for ideas.

Thanks

helpctr.exe runs multiple times ? Not a known issue.

You should be able to fix it by running sfc /scannow.

Also check the startup items (start > run > type msconfig ) to see if
helpctr is loaded multiple items. If yes, uncheck them.

Hi,

No but I've ever hear of. It may be a file association is messed up. Are you
sure it's 300-400 times?

Well, here's one more case to add to your records. Typically when
helpctr.exe tries to initiate on my machine it gets to around 300 instances.
Today I've set a new record and had 1,100 instances of helpctr.exe (and the
watson error reporter) running in addition to my regular processes. This is
not a virus, or spyware, or adware, or anything like that. I don't know what
it is, but could really use some help getting it to stop. Both OS partitions
on this machine have the same malady. The startup portion of my registry
seems to check out okay (i.e. doesn't have 300 registry entries for
helpctr.exe). What on earth am I to do (as I am sure the originator of this
thread would like to know also)?
