Hunting down a pinhead

Some pinhead thought it would be fun to hit me with a trijon horse. I need
to reinstall Windows XP. My dick version is older then the version I am
running so it will not let me reinstall. How do I get past this problem?

You might consider Vista. It's much harder for a pinhead to hit you with a
Trojan.

Formatting the hard drive to solve a virus or spyware problem is
rather like using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll
probably get the job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost always
unnecessary.

However, if that's what you want to do, you have two options:

1) Use your existing installation CD to perform a clean installation,
formatting the hard drive as the first step.

2) You'll either need to uninstall SP2 (Control Panel, Add/Remove
programs) before attempting the upgrade, or try slipstreaming SP2 into
older WinXP installation.

For slip-streaming the service pack and subsequent updates to WinXP:

After backing up any data (being careful not to backup the virus)
you wish to transfer to the new OS installation, simply boot from the
WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to delete,
create, and format partitions as part of the installation process. (You
may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to
boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.

Only temporarily. As the nasty boys only write badware for the most

Very seldom does someone need the draconian solution of reinstallation
because of infection with a Trojan. Depending on what you are infected
with, it's usually possible to solve such a problem far more easily
with anti-virus software.

And by the way, rather than blaming the "pinhead," you should realize
that it was your own lack of providing adequate protection for your
computer, and not practicing "safe hex" that caused the problem. There
will always be pinheads. You need to protect yourself against them.

Two points:

1. If you have SP2 installed, and your XP CD is without it, it is an
older version than what's installed. That's why you get the message

2. There are ways around the above, but they are irrelevant. You are
doing the reinstallation incorrectly, and that's why you are getting
the message. A proper reinstallation begins by formatting the drive;
once the drive is formatted, what version you *had* on it doesn't
matter. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order
if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean
installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).
