I have 37 programs running at start up. How do I shut
some of them down? And how can I make sure I'm not
shutting down something I need.

Only you know what you need. To disable programs from starting with your PC
goto Start>>Run>>Type "msconfig" and goto the Startup Tab. If you dont know
what a program is search www.google.com for the name of the EXE.
