Help!!! XP booting trouble.

I have an XP system that had trouble booting. It displayed the following
message "c:\windows\system\vgaoem.fon" is missing or corrupt. Finially got
that error fixed, now everytime the system starts, it comes to the screen
saying it didn't shut down properly last time and I can choose Safe Mode,
Last Known Good etc.... However after trying all these options it now makes
it to the Windows XP logo screen and the blue bar going across the bottom,
blinks off for a second, then the logos back again, and reboots...over and
over. Can anyone help.

Hi, Bobby.

Your fonts (including vgaoem.fon) should be in C:\Windows\Fonts, not
\system. And you should have a backup copy in C:\Windows\system32\dllcache,
put there by Windows File Protection for just this purpose. You could copy
the file from the cache to \Fonts, but if something has messed up that file,
it may have damaged others, too.

This sounds like a job for...tada!... the System File Checker. At the Run
prompt, type: sfc /scannow

SFC will compare each WinXP operating system file with the "known good" copy
held in the cache and replace any missing or corrupted ones. Have your
WinXP CD-ROM handy; SFC probably will need to see this.

If this doesn't solve the problem in your case, you may need to do an
in-place upgrade, also known as a repair install, as described in KB article
315341. If you need help with this, let us know.

Thanks for the reply. First I can't get to the run box. When inserting the cd
I choose the installation to repair, and it ask which volume & password. Then
I am at the c:\>WINDOWS
From there I have tried a couple of the commands but none seemd to help the
problem.
I have also tried to install fresh and hoping it would give me the option to
repair, but it never did, when it came to a point where it was going to
format the harddrive I stopped. I don't know what else to do.

Hi, Bobby.

It seems to me that it's time for you to do the "in-place upgrade". Full
instructions are in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 315341:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

Some users prefer MVP Michael Stevens' version of the same instructions:
How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and follow the KB instructions for Method 2. Do
not press "R" for Repair the first time it is offered, in Step 3. Press
Enter here and press "R" when you get to Step 5. As you will see, this
reinstalls WinXP completely, but it preserves your installed applications
and data. (If you see an offer to reformat, STOP! You've taken a wrong
turn somewhere.) As soon as you get your firewall and antivirus back in
place, go to Windows Update to be sure you have SP2 and any later updates.
