Help with XP machine and Internet

XP Professional computer started behaving strangely and could not get on the
internet. The AOL error said that a firewall was blocking access,
regardless of my turning the firewall off. I ran a virus scan, and AVG
identified and deleted 7 viruses. There were also many instances of malware
as identified by Adaware SE. HijackThis and CWShredder helped me delete a
few other bad things, and I got the computer to run pretty well. However, I
could not connect to the internet. I tried AOL dial-up on their site, then
when I got it back to my place I installed two other browsers, a different
modem, and I was able to try a NIC on my broadband. No matter which
browser, method of connection, internet settings config, etc, I could not
get on the internet. I could, however, get on my LAN and see the other
computers, and I could ping everything on the network.

Was the internet problem a consequence of the damage done by the viruses?
How might I repair the damage?

What SP version is the OS? If SP2 try this:
Start | Run | cmd | OK
netsh winsock reset catalog [enter]

Then reboot.

If that doesn't help, run from the cmd prompt

ipconfig /flushdns

For Pre-SP2

The internet problem was a consequence of using XP which is so vulnerable to
viruses. I suggest you look at running a real operating system like
GNU/Linux or FreeBSD.

Do you have so much free time that you can waste it with shit answers like
that? Lucky guy.

If you can't contribute something to the problem at hand, please save your
clutter for others' threads.
