A mate has just received a new pc but did not realise that he bought it
without a o/s.
On looking at his system the hard disk has no partitions and the bios is set
to boot from cd.When you reboot it comes back with an error saying something
like "Please insert system disk and press enter" and then nothing happens
cause the disk cant be read....Any help will be appreciated

Well if it is a new PC why he/she or you would like to troubleshoot it
anyway just take it back and get your money or replacement from the shop.
It is OD how it is new and without OS?.
HTH.

nass

Well if its got no o/s its not going to boot, and currently is just a large
paperweight
The mate will have to go out and by an o/s, but I suspect he would be better
advised to seek proffesional help

what i meant to say was that with the win xp disk in the cd drive it comes
back with the error as stated in original post when you try to boot from it

Double check to be sure the bios really is set to boot from CD first...

If you still cannot boot from the cd...then it must be dirty or scratched...

as the XP cd should be bootable

Oh...just thought of something...

The machine actually might have an operting system on it...
could be that the data cable fell off (internally)...

Check in the bios to be sure the HD and cdrom (or DVD) is detected...

If not...take it back to the place of purchase!

When you boot with the XP CD in place and the computer starts do you see the
message "press any key to boot from CD"????????????

what kind of computer is it.. where did he get it.. did he know it had
no OS? did he buy a seperate os disk?
nowadays.. brand new computers come with the OS preinstalled and has
an internal system recovery to back to system default.
