I have been running Xp home on my system and need to switch to professional
in order to utilize IIS. my problem is that I cannot get a clean install of
Xp Pro. I can't get rid of the old OS. When I try to install Xp Pro I have
both Operating systems on the same drive. I have also tried to upgrade to
pro but the IIS doesn't function properly. Right now I have Xp PRo running
on a seperate partition but I need to get home off of the disk so I can use
that space....please help

boot from the xp pro install disk, then do a clean partition of the drive as a
starting option.. THEN install it.. if that don't work, throw away the satan
possessed hard drive.. heh

You had two courses, provided this is a regular Full or Upgrade version
of Pro.

One is to boot Home, take the Install - Upgrade to upgrade it, retaining
all installed software.

The other is to ensure you format the drive and do a complete clean
start. Boot the XP Pro CD direct. Enter Setup, and after the license
agreement take New Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC;
select and delete the current partition and make a new RAW one to be
formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one - which is what I
think you did.

If you put it in the same folder you need to edit the boot.ini file -
Control Panel - System - Advanced - Performance click Settings in Start
up and Error, then Edit. Delete the line that refers to the XP Home in
[Operating systems]. Then reinstall third party software

If you installed in a different folder, your best action is probably to
delete the reference to Pro instead, then boot the Home, delete the
folder where Pro was put and go ahead with the upgrade.
