help with xp files missing can't start program, but can back up f

xp says I have to back up files that are missing. I went to this web site
and read how, must be doing something wrong. Tried to start backup said the
version of windows in machine is newer. Booted up with disc an tried to hit
{R} to repair, now I have, Tried it a couple of times , FOUR window home
edition xp to choose from when system boots up. Problem still not fixed.
With 98SE it was easy. All I want to do is recopy xp so it will replace the
missing files and maybe fix registry. "I also want to get rid of the extra
{win home editions} at boot up. WHAT CAN I DO?
PLEASE HELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you installed SP2 from Windows Update site then that's why you are
having difficulty doing a Repair Install.
Look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and see if you can uninstall
SP2. You can edit the Boot file by
rt clicking on MyComputer>select Properties>Advanced>Startup and
Recovery-Settings>Edit. Remove the three
lower WinXP Home entries. Delete from the last line upwards. If you
are able to Uninstall SP2 check here for Repair Install.

Un-dual boot:

In XP, press WinKey-Break,(or start/run 'sysdm.cpl'), Advanced Tab, "Start Up and Recovery" area, Settings button, then edit the old
line out with the edit button. Reboot, and delete the files for the old OS. Don't format C:, you need stuff in C: root.

If you run an XP "Upgrade"setup, from the original, or "Gold" version of the setup CD, and you have SP2 installed, it might go into
a setup loop, and you could lose your install. Uninstall SP2, BEFORE you Upgrade setup from CD (that lacks sp2 on it.)
