help with windows xp

my laptop has a 64+ athlon prossesor and i use the windows xp home edition
last night i messed with a file and now whenever i try to open a file the dos
screen appears and i have to start each program the old way. Same thing goes
when i try o start my pc again all the programs that are usually loading when
i start the pc open he dos screen

it was an adware and i was trying to erase it. I then opened properties of
the file and were it said aplication underneath it had the option the file
you used for opening the file.from that moment whatever program i put to open
that file the pc was using it for all the files.i managed to erase the
adaware but my last selection that of the command prompt stayedand now is
apearing whenever i want to run a program

Goto (In any Folder Window) Tools->Folder Options->File Types. Reset the
extension to most files that are associated to DOS. Else it's best to use
System Restore as the procedure I mentioned before is a bit messy too!
