You're on to something here
Without the cable it is stablenetstat command shows no connections.
is "state=syn_sent" in netstat meaning that they are trying to connect to me
rather then my pc connecting to them?
Is there away to block or clean this up? What is epmap?
Sure, download and install ZoneAlarm Pro, or get a router with NAT, to
block the inbound.
We still don't know if you are compromised or not, but at least we know
the crashing is centered around your internet connection.
Now, the thing to understand is that the SP2 Firewall is not really a
firewall, it's a personal blocking service that is being called a
firewall. I never trust a firewall built by the same vendor as the OS.
You need to get a router and set it up for your DSL connection - a
Linksys BEFSR41 (version 3) unit is about $45 in most stores.
epmap is the name for one of the ports that MS uses to share file, it
has no business being exposed to the internet on your computer.
You might be able to use the XP SP2 Firewall to block everything, remove
exceptions, and then get back online. You can also uninstall
File/Printer sharing in Network Settings - unless you have more than one
computer.
