help with windows explorer

A friend had windows xp sp1 and I have xp sp2.

when i have explorer running at the bottom of the window in the gray area
explorer
shows the number of objects/files i have selected and the bytes
slelected....BUT on my friends
computer this isnt there....

How do i get her explorer to show the total number of files and bytes
selected...

P.S. I asked this in microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support but got no
