I'm having trouble with windows defender every time I try to open it up a
message suddenly appears that says," application failed to initialize:
0x800106ba." The message continues by saying, "a program caused windows
defender's service to stop." I've tried to open it up maually but it won't
let me and this message keeps poping up. What should I do? I tried to
uninstall it and reinstall it but I do not know how.
PLEASE HELP!!!

You go to the Event Logs off of Control Panel/Admin Tools/Computer Manager
and find out what the details of the error message is indicating, first,
and then you post back.

you have avast antivirus running, it most likely doesn't like Win Def. Look
in Services and put every instance of avast on Manual so it doesn't start
automatic, restart, and test Win Def. I had the same problem with Bitdefender
antivirus. give it a go may work for you too. at least we'll know what's
preventing WD from starting/working properly

M

Mr. Arnold

Now what should I do?

Most likely is the System Event Log or Application Event Log, there is going
to be one message or messages that have a red icon signifying that a
critical error as occurred, pertaining to WD's abort and stoppage.

I'm not sure why you think it's a conflict with Avast, I, as many others,
run Avast AV with Windows Defender with no issues.

I have the same problems, can't open it to repair it, can.t download another one due to windows pop up which reads vista already has defender installed on it so the new download will be terminated.

Same problems as what? You've started a new thread as if you were
responding to a previous one, but included no details.

Has anyone got a fix to this problem....I got it too Rick!
0x800106ba error, to fix open manually but the windows defender will not open.
Microsoft indicate that it is an error associated with expired licence or
whatever and suggest removal of and reinstalling windows defender
but........you cannot remove windows defender installed on a vista system..no
progams listed in add/remove programs via control panel

My computer is a laptop with oem vista ultimate installed and windows
defender has NEVER worked.
Have another computer with vista home installed with NO windows defender
issues

Did you check to see if the WD service has been Disabled ?
Are there any other anti-spyware programs installed ?
Is Windows Live OneCare installed ?

Hi MowGreen,
Regarding missing file...
I can see svchost.exe in mt systen 32 files but I cannot see
svchost.exe -k secsvcs...which is what defender is asking for when it
starts up (it maybe part of svchost .exe?)
cheers

Yes, it is 'part' of svchost. Suggest you run sfc /scannow to ensure
that all system files are intact: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Does AVG 8 contain a spyware component ? You may need to disable it in
order to allow WD to run properly ... if it's set up the same as on the
other PC, then you *should* not have to fiddle with it.
Note the *should*

Hi Gang !
I am having very similar problems with Windows Defender. Even though I have
done everything in my power and knowledge to disable it and let my Norton
Symantec 2008 wall to wall Security program control things, I can't get the
remaining 8,9 drivers etc., uninstalled. [Windows will NOT let me change
attributes so I can finish uninstalling Win Def. completely !] : neither as
an administrator, or even as the creator/owner ? What's up with this ? Norton
has new definitions, updates every day or at least three times week with
REAL updated protection. Windows Defender doesn't do anything even close to
that. All it does is sit there and give my nb's security software problems as
it attempts to disable/close Norton and open itself as the #1 protector in
the security heirarchy; hence my decision to get RID of Windows Defender. It
was great for early XP when WinDef was first released, however it cannot
handle the vast amount of realtime protection when running VISTA HomePremium
and MS Office, MS Gallery, etc., which really slow down my dv9548us HP
notebook. I was going to order 4 g's of RAM but after an honest discussion
with a REAL American customer rep @ Hewlett-Packard who told me about the 3.5
g ceiling on usuable RAM for 32 bit systems ,so I did not. I have been
putting off d/l & installing Win VISTA SP1 update
up until now hoping that MS would produce a revised version that REALLY
works and doesn't wreak havoc on other drivers and Windows programs.
Unfortunately it looks as though MS is pushing VISTA into the curb and
focusing all their attention on Windows "7". Somebody please tell me that
downloading and installing SP1 is really a good idea and has made your VISTA
experience so much better...anyone out there ??"

Ok Justin,
I understand your problem, and I can help you fix it, go to Start, Control
Panel, Make sure control panel is on "classic view" then go to administrative
tools, then services, find Windows Defender, double click it, make sure the
startup type is on Automatic, and then press start up windows defender if it
is off.
