Help with update downloads for windows XP home edition

I loaded for the first time earthlink. Once installed was
not allowing to use website called earthlink support
center stated I had a virus need to update my windows XP
and download and install all critical updates well
needless to say my computer will not allow me to download
any updates. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
