help with svchost problem?

I have XP and use dial-up. Beginning a few days ago, whenever I connect to
my ISP, Windows gets locked up for a long time and when I do get online
eventually it can again lock up the browser.

What is happening is svchost.exe, the DNS Client service one, takes up to
99% of my CPU as soon as I connect, and keeps it there. Then when the
browser (Avant) does get opened, the browser will will go up to a high % of
the CPU, and that will lock up. I don't know if this is all of a single
problem or not, but they seem to have occurred
simultaneously.

Concurrently, the Event Viewer shows a string of errors with Service Control
Manager as the source. This appears related timewise. I tried a recent
system restore but that didn't help -- I have more restore points further in
the past I could try if that is a possible solution.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is a major PITA. Thanks.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangents?

Please post copies of your Event Viewer Reports. We might be able to
eliminate some so that you can see the wood.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System log in Event Viewer for the last boot. No Information Reports or
Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

I haven't done the event viewer task yet, but immediately found a yellow
mark on Multiport Communications Port (COM3) in device manager. Properties
states the following:

"Windows cannot determine the settings for this device. Consult the
documentation that came with this device and use the Resource tab to set the
configuration. [Code 34]"

FYI The modem checks out fine and there are no problems connecting to the
ISP. It is only after connecting that the problems occur.

I hope this can expedite a solution but I will post the event viewer results
if you still need them.

Thanks for your prompt response.
