Thanks for the suggestion.
I have tried and no luck.
I have Tweak Ui 2.1 for XP, that did not fix the problem either.
I can't find the line in my regedit

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]

2. In the right-pane, double-click "Use Search Asst" and set it's value to
"yes"

any more suggestions?

Hi Frank,

To enable XP Search companion for files, try this:

1. Open Regedit and navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState]

2. In the right-pane, double-click "Use Search Asst" and set it's value to
"yes"

3. Close Registry Editor

FYI, Tweak UI for Windows XP can automate the above steps.

I need a little help with my seach companion ...... It's turned off
under my log on name and I can't seem to get it turned back on. Under
'Guest' log on it works fine. It seems to be in 'Classic' mode when I
log on, but I don't know how to change it. I'm including links to 2
pictures of it on the desktop. 'Guest.jpg' which is the way it looks
under 'Guest' log on, and the way I'd like to have it, and 'Me.jpg'
which is the way it looks when I log on ....... Thanks for any help
.......

Maybe I did not explain it right, I went into regedit and
HKEY_Current_User\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\cabinetstate, I don't have "Use Search Asst" in the right pane.
here are what I have in it, (Default), Fullpath, fullpathaddress, setting
under name.
Are you sure this is the key that I need to look for it?

Thanks again.

If the "Use Search Asst" value is missing, then it uses the XP search. To
switch over to classic search, create a new REG_SZ named "Use Search Asst"
and set it to "no"
