Help with removing about:blank

Hi everyone,

Running Running Windows Xp, all up to date, and Windows Defender 2 which is
also up to date. I don't where from, but my pc acquired the about:blank
problem which takes over my homepage and gives me constant work stoppages
and popups. I also believe it is limiting my access to controls when I open a
window such as in the control panel so that I have difficulty adjusting
anything. Doing a system restore does nothing for this problem. The
about:blank pager directs to a 'protectmypcdotnet" web address offering of
all things, adware removal tools. Are there any simple steps I can take to
rid my pc of this? Defender does not even notice it with a full system scan.
Thanks

Perhaps AboutBuster would help:

Good luck. The fact that Windows Defender doesn't even notice it is not
encouraging news for us WD users . . .

About:Buster *may* help. It's at least something to try, but be sure to
note the instructions ("Important steps to getting this tool to work
properly") before downloading:

Hello Frank,

This is a AndyManchesta or Ron Kinner case beacuse I cannot find any good
advice within any forum without using HijackThis and to be carefully guided.
Get HijackThis.exe from
http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/hjt199//HijackThis.exe
http://computercops.biz/HijackThis.html

Save it to C:\hjt (new folder) then Open it and select Scan and Save Log.
Note where you saved the log then send it to him as an attachment. Put
Hijack in the subject so he'll know it's not spªm.

Alternatively you can post it on the Dell Forum ªt:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=si_hijack

Put Ron in the subject so he will see it. You do not need to have a Dell to
post but you will need to register.

I ran the hijack program and am waiting for a response. I also tried the
cwshredder program which found nothing.

Frank - I had that "About Blank" hit me twice allready!
I could not find anything helpful on the HijackThis forum unfortunately, so
I went into the registry and put in "about" as a search phrase..... took me
about 4 hours to go through and delete those nasty additions. :) I also
went and did a search through the registry in regards to any web address.
Anything that did not look legit got deleted.

Kinda guttsy move on my part, but worst comes to worst, I will just
re-install the op system, and all the drivers.

(many years ago I learned to keep important things off of the PC backed up
in triplicates)

Good luck with "ABOUT BLANK"
