i have 3 computers each computer has one network card all using windows XP Pro.

all computers connects to a 5 port 10/100 Switch.

also have a Cable modem attached to teh Switch.

all computers are using TCP/IP and is set to Obtain a Ip automatically

they all pick up a 24.*.*.* ip address from my ISP DHcp server...

How in this way can i share files between teh 3 computers without adding
seccond NIC crad or addng a router

i tryed to add a seccond ip but would not work

Did you opt to share folders or drives on any of the computers to see if the
others could see the share?

yes all computers have a shared folder with allow all set

if i set all computers to
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3

i can share files but no internet

What is the range of i.p. numbers that are being assigned by your ISP?

In order for peer-to-peer sharing to work properly all 3 computers
must be on the same subnet, which means that the first 3 segments of
the i,p. addresses must be identical on all 3.

Also if you have sharing configured on these computers then they will
be "wide open" to any and all other people connected to the same ISP
and who are using i.p. addresses in the same subnet.

You need to get a router and use it instead of the switch. They are
getting to be "cheaper than dirt" now, especially if you don't need a
wireless model.

Good luck

You need a router. Period. All three of your computers are getting public
IP addresses - which will make it impossible to network them. In addition,
all three are fully exposed to any passing hacker or cracker being connected
in this manner.

If you are absolutely not going to buy a router (which would pay for itself in a
couple months, plus make you more secure), you'll need to use IPX/SPX to share
files, and DISABLE NetBIOS Over TCP. Here is my article with details:

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/one-unique-case-where-ipxspx-may-help.html

You'll need good layered security, emphasising Layers 2 thru 5, since you have
declined to pay for Layer 1.

With 3 computers, though, a router would make way more sense. For so many
reasons.

Roger,

If you're going to pay for 3 IP addresses from your ISP, you'll have to use
IPX/SPX. Three addresses will frequently be on 3 different subnets, so IP
connectivity between the computers won't always work.

As Ron says, though, you really can afford a router. You really can't NOT
afford one.

Richard,

If Roger is too cheap to buy a router, he CAN use IPX/SPX. It's a waste of
money, over complicated, and not secure, but it will work.

thnaks chuck thios is just what i was hopping for, i have a router and i have
a isa server

i just was trying to prove a point to a friend at work, thnaks bud

Anytime, Roger. 8-)

That might work if Roger could get IPX/SPX up and working but it still won't
address the underlying insecurity in directly networking his PCs to the
Internet without some sort of security between the PCs and the rest of the
world.

Richard,

I agree. Steve provided the instructions for making it work.

The OP said explicitly

I added several comments why it's a waste of money, it's insecure, and it's
stupid.

using netbuei would work so long your not using a router, and it's the
fastest protocol-period.
