Help with names under Documents and Settings

Kevin

I searched the KB and it told me that under home edition,
I can't change the name of the main file under Documents
and Settings. I went into the registry and changed the
registered name. however, It does not change the name. I
tried renaming it but it gave me the error that it is a
system folder and cannot be renamed

What is it you want to change -- your login name? In that case; open the
User Accounts applet from Control Panel and do the desired changes there.

You cannot rename user folders in Documents and Settings. You need to create a new account, with the way you want it to appear on the folder, then copy the old user profile to the new one.

Copy a User Profile:

Open System in Control Panel. On the User Profiles tab, and under Profiles stored on this computer, click the user profile you want to copy, and then click Copy To.

In the Copy To dialog box, under Copy profile to, type the location for the new profile, or click Browse to select the path.
Click Change to open the Choose User dialog box, click a new user from the Names list, and then click Add. The new user name will appear in Add Name. Click OK to add the user as a new user profile on your computer.

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to the local computer to copy user profiles. To open a Control Panel item, click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the appropriate icon.

Or: you could just change the name of the account in question (without
transferring the settings to a nwew one). You might need to do the name
change when logged in to another account, but no settings transfer should be
necessary.

The issue usually is that the user has renamed the account, and wants the Documents and Settings folder to match.

Did you ever resolve this problem? Here's my dilema. I need to change the
default user profile. I've tried deleting it and copying but there's no
option to change it. If I delete it, I goes back to creating a new one with
same freaking name.

The default user account (folder) is just the configuration of Windows when
a new account is created.

This is what I do...

I create an account that I will later delete and remove from the registry.
An account name of stupidass is uniqu and eazy to search for in the
registry. Configure the stupidass account the way you would like all
acounts to look, then log out of that account and log onto the administrator
account. Copy the NTUSER.DAT from the stupidass account and replace the
NTUSER.DAT file in the default user account with the NTUSER.DAT file of the
stupidass account.

Go to computer management - Local Users and Groups - Users and delete the
stupidass user.

Go to the registry editor and search for stupidass - delete the whole key,
that is the wierd number in {numbers and letters} above the stupidass
account.

Delete the stupidass folder under Documents and Settings and you are done.

Congratulations, you have a custom configurations for all subsequent
users...this includes sounds, quick launch, taskbar, screansavers,
background, window views, etc...
