When paint is opened and text box is selected, the paint program crashes
with a generic error (send error report to MS) . This seems to happen when
the text box is selected and when I try to choose a font to use on the
paint text box.

Your installed copy of MSPaint may have become corrupt. You can uninstall
it and reinstall it. Or, try the SFC = System File Check to correct it.
Either way, you'll need to WindowsXP CD to do it.
How do I install / uninstall mspaint?
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000758.htm

Start>Run>type SFC /SCANNOW (space between C and /) and press OK.
Have the XP CD handy for it may ask for it.

Thank you Byte;
I did an "SFC /SCANNOW" with the XPCD in.
No Change
I removed MSPAINT.EXE and reinstalled.
No Change
I Extracted a fresh copy of MSPAINT.EXE from CD (I386)
No Change
I Checked the fonts directory in windows for files missing
No Missing files
Anyone else have an Idea??

Delete this key in Regedit.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint

MSPaint is rubbish. If you want a simple and free MSPaint replacement try
SaintPaint.
