Help with msi, PLEASE!!!!!

I have problems installing updates. I am using Vista, no service pack
yet. Having diligently studied the problem on line, I got an
impression that the services on my computer should include "Windows
Installer" which is not the case, I only can see "Windows Modules
Installer". No "Windows Installer" among my services. Was this service
renamed in Vista, or am I in deep troubles? Is there a way out?
Please, help!!!

Yes, "normal startup is ticked".

This happens when some earlier updates are missing.
