When I click on a link lets say from an instant message it automatically
opens with AOL how do I make it open with Internet Explorer?

Im just trying to make Internet Explorer my default Web page viewer if that
makes any sense

Open Internet Options, Programs tab. Choose Reset Web Settings, press OK. Type regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll in Start/Run dialog. These both commands *almost* sets Internet Explorer as the default browser. If not see http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFAQ.htm tip on setting IE as default browser.
