help with comp management needed

I can't run widows update, just comes up with an error code. following the on
line help, it gave 3 things to try, first 2 did nothing, 3rd tels you to go
into system admin, comp management. when I treid this, I could not open comp
management . This is my pc not a company one so therefore I have full admin
rights. I get a message MMC cannot open the file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\compmgmt.msc any help would be appreciated. thanks
