Help with CD-RW and DVD+/-RW conflict

Hello to all:

I need some help....

I have a ECS K7S5A V. 3.1 Motherboard
AMD ATHLON XP 2200+ CPU
512 Mb PC-2100 RAM
80 Gb. Hard Drive

But the problem is that I have a BENQ 4816P CD-RW on Slave Jumper Setting on
secondary channel and I want to
hook up a Optorite DD0401 DVD+/-RW on Master Jumper Setting on the same IDE
Channel.

The problem is that after the POST and the BIOS tries to identifies both
drives but the DVD+/-RW is not recognized
but if I disconnect the CD-RW and leave the DVD+/-RW alone, no problem....
but if I try to get both going only the CD-RW
is found.

It won't open the tray or respond even if it is hooked up...

Any help or suggestion on this... any help will be appreciated...

Hmm, do you have a normal IDE cable or one designed to work with cable
select? You could probably check by jumpering both drives as cable
select and see if that works.

Also, is the BIOS configured to auto detect everything or is it maybe
set to expect only one drive on that IDE?

Can it be that because both are also CD-RW there is a signal conflict?

<snip>
Make sure that ALL jumpers for the devices are set correct e.g if you
are having both drives on the Same IDE chain set to Master and Slave.
In the BIOS set both Cdrom drives in the Standard section from Auto
to,"None".
Aoatapi devices do not need the Auto option on most mother boards. If
this works you can re-enable one of them if you need to use it as a
boot device e.g using a bootable Cdrom disk.
Note:1
Depending on your usage having your 2 Cdrom drives on the same IDE
chain is not always optimal.
Note:2
Having a hard drive and a Cdrom drive on the same IDE chain will not
impair the performance of the faster hard drive unless both devices
are being accessed at the same time.
