Help With Boot Problem

I'm building a second computer and am having problems booting to windows.
When I turn on the computer I see the HDD LED blinking and hear a single beep
indicating it is trying to boot but nothing appear on the monitor. After
about a minute, I hear another single beep and it continues to try to boot
without success. I then hear a single beep for the third time and it starts
to go through the boot process and the monitor starts to display the posting
information. It then displays an Error window that says "Windows did not
start.... and gives me the choice of staring in Safe Mode, Normal Mode, etc.,
I select Normal Mode and Windows loads. When Windows is fully loaded I get
an error message saying "Your System has recovered from a serious error..."
and gives me the option of sending an error report to Microsoft.
I am able to use the computer and the few programs I have loaded seem to
work. I have had this problem from the very first boot up. I thought it
might be a BIOS issue and updated the motherboard BIOS yesterday but am still
having the same problem. I can't figure out what is causing the boot
problem. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Mac

Check the Event log - what does it say the error is ?

Boot normally or to Safe Mode and check the Event Viewer for any errors. Click
Start > Run, type: eventvwr.msc and press Enter. Check both System and
Applications, double click on any entry listed in the right pane to see the
description which will also have a link to go to a page for a possible solution.

Checking the event viewer for clues as others have suggested is a good
idea, but I am leaning towards a BIOS/ hardware problem
since you say it fails to continue after the first POST beep [which it
should do].
Make sure all BIOS settings are correct for starters, then try
diagnostics on RAM and HDD.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I will try them in order. I'm not familiar
with the even log viewer so wasn't sure at what I was looking at or what it
all means. Here are some of the errors I found around the same date/time
period. I have no idea what they mean. I don't know if it means anything
but I noticed two sets of Logon failures then a success. Would that account
for the three times the computer tried to boot to Windows (the two
unsuccessful times (two beeps) and the successful time (third beep)?

Bob1's suggestion about the single beep during posting being a DRAM Refresh
Error sound possible since this is on an AMI BIOS. I always thought a single
beep was the "All OK" signal but I guess that is only Award Bios systems.

Anyway I'll test and play with the RAM first. If anyone can tell me what
the Event Log stuff means I would be grateful. I know just enough about
computers to get me into trouble. I'm not a tech at all so any help will be
appreciated.

Thanks very much, Mac

Mike,

When you are viewing the event log, double-click on that line of text
and it will show " in english - text" what it means
I double-clicked on one of MY 1003 errors and this appears:

Event Type: Warning

Event ID: 1003
Date: 1/25/2007

Description:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from
the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0015Dxyxyx.
The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue
to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP)

You can then click on that msft link so explanation of 1003 error:

I looked at the links for the Event Log and wasn't able to find any
information that suggested what to do for my problem. Either that or I
didn't understand the technical language (which is probably the real reason
if I told the truth).

The single beep during boot for AMI BIOS apparently indicates a DRAM Refresh
Error like Bob_I suggested. I checked my ram and both sticks are listed on
the Kingston site as being recommended for my M/B. They are two idential
sticks: KVR333X64C25/512 512MB 333MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 DIMM. I ran two
different tests on the RAM and both say the RAM is OK. I ran tests on the
SATA HD's and they seem to be OK.

I was unable to delete the Hiberfil.sys file as suggested in Bob-i's link
because I when I tried to boot with the WinXP CD it wouldn't let me access
the SATA HD's (couldn't find C:\ ). Is there a way to access C: on a SATA
HD using the WinXP CD or Boot Disk?

Any other ideas? Thank you all so much for your help. Mike

As soon as the XP disk begins to boot you are prompted at the bottom of the screen
to press F6 to install additional drivers. Press F6 when you see it and install
drivers for hte SATA drives when prompted to install the extra drivers.

2 Things:
Keep an eye for the F6 prompt or you may miss it.
You won't be prompted for the additional drivers until the XP disk finishes loading
it's files.

Thanks Brian,
Since I had "installed" the SATA drive controllers when I installed Win XP I
didn't think I had to do it again when booting with a Win CD. Now that you
told me about it, it kind of makes sense though. Thanks a lot. I'll use the
SATA controller disc

I have a nearly identical system, and had nearly identical problem, including
frequent black screen/hard crashes/autoreboot/"serious error". I eventually
ended up doing a selective start and was able to start the system without the
hard crashes . I never sorted it out until I removed the Catalyst drivers
and reinstalled a new set from the ATi website. Wouldn't have thought it
would have acted how it did, but all problems resolved as soon as I replaced
the Catalyst drivers.
