Boot problem

A friend gave me an older HP tower. The only thing I know about it is that
it has XP on board. When I attempt to boot it, it gives me three sets of
three beeps, followed by a single beep and nothing else happens. Can someone
shed some light on this?

Nothing to do with Windows - it's a hardware problem. Try asking in a
hardware group. IMHO you received a lemon.

One short beep is generally good. Anything else is a problem.

The beeps tell a story that can be interpreted by reading the
generally available online manual.

Can you specify the make/model and any BIOS information/version type
things you can see on the monitor when it starts up?

More information now decreases the number of guesses and questions
later!

These beeps are called boot error codes or BIOS error codes,
usually listed in manufacturers' manuals, which ought to be
available on the HP web site, even for old hardware.

Make lemonade.

Could be easy to fix or useful for salvage.

It's broke. Busted. Dead.

Need a good door stop?
