HELP!! Windows XP components all (very) slow to open

Hello,

This is a problem that began three weeks ago. First noticed that IE6SP1 was
extremely slow to open in any manner, i.e. from executable, shortcut, link
in email, or <right click> Open in New Window. This slowness problem is also
evident in Windows Explorer opening, Outlook Express opening, and Windows
Search opening.

I have used spyware detection and found no problems.

I have searched the KB

Used IE6 newsgroup for suggestions and ideas.

I have removed XP SP1 in order to try a repair of IE6. I have completely
cleaned out Temporary Internet Files, history, cookies. Tried:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Reinstalled IE6 and service pack.

Done an in place upgrade of Windows XP home.

Reinstalled all of the critical, security, and the IE cumulative update as
per Maurice N.

I guess my system is pretty much up to date as it was before this all
started.

Nothing has brought a cure or fix to the problem. Everything still opens
very slowly. All non-windows apps open up just fine including Opera.

So one everything is fine, the next day all windows components are slow. The
only thing that was done in the interim was installing Money 2004 Deluxe
from the Microsoft Money web site and its .NET components.

All ideas would be welcome and appreciated.

Hi Gerry,
I can suggest two things:
1. Restore your system to a previous date which is before the SP install as
well as Money and..
2. If this does not work i would suggest reinstall XP.
I had a similar problem and had to format and reinstall.
Have a nice weekend.

you dont mention scanning for viruses,if not spyware then it is likely a virus.

Farid,

Thank you for replying. Restore points are altered with the in place XP
upgrade so I can't return to the pre Money state. Formatting and installing
XP fresh is much too drastic with all of the stuff I have together with the
complete lack of time I could find for it. That would probably send this old
windows user to another GUI!.

Rick,

I didn't think of mentioning that, sorry. I have scheduled scans on Monday
and Friday with nothing to report in months.

Have you checked in Task Manager to make sure all your RAM is being used up?

When I click to open IE there is about 875meg of available RAM and when it
opens about 40 to 50 seconds later there is about 860meg of available RAM.
When the initial click occurs there is a spike up to 7% on the CPU and then
a spike to @35% when the program opens.

That all sounds perfectly normal. Sorry, no more suggestions from me.

Just to try to narrow it down a bit more, does it still happen if you
boot in safe mode (f8 after the BIOS exits)? (Do you have a network
connected? if so, maybe safe mode with networking). That would rule out
a bunch of drivers and similar.
