HELP!!!! Windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt windows will not start

I tried Windows recovery to replace the file from the
original CD; however when I get the C: prompt and try to
change directory or do a directory (DIR) command, it
states there was an error in the enumeration process or
something like that. Can anyone help me? Nothing will
boot Windows...not safe mode, not last known
configuration...please tell me there's an answer!!!

If ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, boot the XP CD and select the
first repair option and then copy ntoskrnl.exe from the CD. You should
find the file in \i386 on the CD and of course it goes in
windows\system32.

copy d:\i386\ntoskrnl.exe c:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

If you can only find ntoskrnl.ex_, then the file needs to be expanded.

expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

This sounds a lot like what is happening to me. my
computer won't start at all beyond the up/down arrow page;
safe node, safe mode with networking, safe mode with
command prompt last known configuration, or start windows
normally. NONE of these options work, anything I try just
keeps rebooting and going back to the same screen.
Eventually, when trying the safe mode with command prompt,
I get this message: "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Windows could not start because
the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows
root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install a copy of
the above file." However, I was never given any xp
software, it came preinstalled on my computer. & no such
thing is avilable via microsoft's "help" pages. Also, this
just happened, out of the blue, no new software or
hardware installations, seemingly no reason. Is/could this
be a virus or worm? Any ideas on what to do or how to
correct this problem? Has the original poster found an
answer? I have attempted to email microsoft directly, but
their "contact page" seems to be anything but, after
clicking through several screens I keep getting dirveted
rather than given the opportunity to send them a question.
I have had & used this system for well over a year & never
before experienced any such problems. The last time I used
it it worked normally but took a VERY long time shutting
down & has since failed to start beyond the mentioned
screen. PLEASE, can someone help me? I am without my
computer. I will try to access this group again to look
for answers but without computer I don't know how often
I'll be able to. If you have a solution, please post or
email me at, (e-mail address removed) Thank you. Any help is greatly
appreciated.

I am having this problem as of last night, after experiencing slower and slower startups and shutdowns. Now I am dead in the water, using another PC to logon now. I found Microsoft page to download repair utilities:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...01-2c68-4de8-9229-ca494362419c&displaylang=en

(to 6 floppies) but the first attempt says file is too large for the floppy, with 1 sec to go. So now what, since download to 6 floppies as stated does not work?

Thanks,
Sandra

Thanks for reply, but I cannot boot, and am not a programmer. :) Just a user who is all of a sudden getting this most annoying error on a p.c. which ran fine until last night. I searched all day and thought I had solution until the download would not fit on floppy though it said it would

Thanks
Sandra

The solution that you think you have is, unfortunately, not going to help
you. If you are not comfortable with the technicalities of troubleshooting -
and I'll be the first to admit that it's not easy - you may wish to find
someone experienced who can do the work for you.
