HELP! Windows patch broke my DVD-RW drive for bruning CD's!

I have a new system. I fresh installed windows XP on it. I was able
to use my Sony DVD-RW drive to burn CDs using the native built-in to
windows method. (insert a blank cd, drag files to it, click "write
these files to CD")

Then I went and downloaded all my windows patches, as well as
installing WMP11, .Net 1.1, and .Net 2.0. I also installed all the
patches that were required after those 3 things got in. Finally, I
got the message "There are no high priority updates for you at this
time" or words to that effect.

I went to put a blank CDR in my drive - and the firxt problem I
noticed was that the Drive label in Windows Explorer switched from
"DVD-RW" to simple "CD".

Then when I went to open it (or drag files to it) an error sound plays
and the error message that comes up is "Incorrect Function".

This is a pristine computer with NO software on it apart from the
WinXP operating system.

The only conclusion I can come up with is that one of the Windows
patches or updates broke my CD burning!!

Help!!

PS. Just want to repeat - there is no software in this machine. With
only windows on this box, this machine was able to burn CD's using my
DVD-RW drive - until I got all my windows updates (and WMP11, .Net
1.1, and .Net 2.0) - upon which it stopped working, saying only
"Incorrect Function."
