HELP Windows hangs

when using my computer WinXP service pack 2
screen freezes unable to do anything other than switch off on main switch.

And just what was the computer doing just before the screen
froze? Name of program? Application? Active process(es)? And
what about something about the computer. CPU, speed, amount
of RAM, video card...supply more details.
 
Try these for a start:

Run a full virus scan with current virus definitions
Run a full spyware scan with current definitions
Defrag

Have you installed any new software lately? You may need to uninstall or patch
it.

Have you installed any new hardware lately? You may need to check the vendor's
web site for updated drivers.
