HELP! Why are files and folders in Temporary Internet Files invisible and undeletable ?

A

Al Dykes

I bet you MVP folks thought this would be an easy "folder Options"
question. I have _all_ the setting in explorer options set to slow
everything and not hide anything, system-wide and on the temp folder
and subfolders.

I ran perfectdisk and looked at the "most fragemnted files" list and
found a 60MB file in
\administrator\local settings\temporary internet files\

I recognized the file and know I don't need and decided to blow it away.

I can't.

It's in \Content.IE5\.... Which is invisible to File Explorer.

I drilled down in FIle Explorer and it shows me NO folders inder
\temporary internet files\. If I look at properties for this folder
it shows me that 60MB is in use (I deleted everything else).
It does not show the COntent folder.

In CMD I drilled down to \temporary internet files\ and if I do DIR *
and it shows zero. I can CD to ContentIE5 and DIR will show me folders
and files.

I can't delete these files or folders (access is denied).

I have no applications running. Obviously IE is always running. PITA.

WTF ?

Here's a little more info. The 60MB file happens to be an Acrobat
"ebook" that I checked out of my library, as an experiment. I assume
it's encrypted and time-stamped to expire, but I should still be able
to delete it.

FWIW I have no acrobat process (that I recognize) running.

What's going on ?

Thanks

If emptying temporary internet files (inside IE) does not work, then you can
use a cmd prompt to delete the file.

Simply open a command console, and type
c:>CD\
c:>cd c:\documents and settings\administrator\local settings\temporary
internet files

At this point, and dir should list the files. You may need to change the
attibute on the file (c:>attrib filename -r -a -s -h) before you can use the
del command to remove it.

Hope this makes sense

You can't access Content.IE5 from Windows Explorer no matter how you have
your settings.

You do not have to *see* the Content.IE5 folder to delete its contents.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
----

Obviously Your Name Here needs to be changed to the appropriate name.

To view:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files

Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
General tab | Settings button | View Files button

To view:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 AND \Content.MSO

Start | Run | Type: cleanmgr | OK | Highlight Temporary Internet Files |
View Files button

Or...

Start | Run | Type: %TEMP% | OK |

You will probably have to click the Folders button on the Tool Bar.
Click: [+] Temporary Internet Files
Click: [+] Content.IE5
Click: Random named folders
View
You can also view Content.MSO

Or Paste into the Start | Run box.
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
