Help--what happened to 6GB?

I have a vista home basic--32bit--with SP1 and all is working just fine. I
did the defragger just to do a sort of a cleanup. Suppose I goofed by doing
it??
I had 23.7gb left on my hard drive. I downloaded the piriform defragger, it
ran and did whatever it does and now I have 6gb less than before the
defragger ran!! Where oh where did 6gb disappear too?? Since I am a total
novice with computers, I wouldn't know the first thing about trying to
recover those 6gb. Can someone give me an explanation, please?? I would
greatly appreciate it. thank you.

I had used the windows defragger but after ready lots of different posts
about a better defragger, that's what I did.
But now, as I said BEFORE defragging the piriform one, I had 23.7 gb--I NOW
have 17.1gb. I thought a
defragment program was to SAVE space not eat it up. Is there any help to
recover it and why did it disappear??
I hope there is help somewhere from you all that have 1,000 times more
understanding than I could ever have.

Probably to an increase in the size of the are needed by Volume Shadow
Copy service. If the defragger moved a lot of files around, that's
what happened.

You should run Disk Cleanup - Click Start Orb, type CleanMgr into the
Start Search box.

That probably won't get your lost big chunk back, but it will help.

That "defraggler" is a Beta, so it might have its problems

For help with the piriform defragmenting program, please go to their web
pages and look for "support". It could be that they do something stupid like
creating a restore point before defragging the drive. They will be best able
to tell you.

Defragmenting a drive neither adds to, nor detracts from, the amount of free
space available on the drive. All it does is rearrange the "file cabinet"
into something more logical for the operating system to work with.

Correct - IF the disk being defragged isn't a disk that is protected
by System Restore, OR if it is protected and the cluster size is 16k
or greater. Most default NTFS formatting results in a 4k cluster
size.

The System Restore function and the Shadow Copies that are saved by
Vista are operating at the sector level on the disk. Any changes in
the use of sectors is seen by System Restore and the Shadow Copy
Service to be file system updates that need to be stored. The more
files that are moved around during a defragging, the larger the
increase in the amount of space used by those services and the larger
the reduction in the free space on the drive.

Space can be regained after a defrag and System Restore by deleting
all but the most recent restore point in Disk Cleanup.

The situation can be rectified (at a cost of starting disk space) so
that it won't happen again by changing the cluster size to 16k or
larger.

chanook*xyz thankyou for getting back to me. I did go to the website and
found out in the defraggler forum I was not the only person to have 6gb
disappear! The idea was that --yes-- something to with restore points--so I
did
that--uninstalled the defraggler!!! But now, the touchpad doesn't work
right and tried to do a check disk at startup
for the volume to fix any errors----problems with that. Screen comes up "ck
disk scheduled" next line says "ck
disk cancelled"!!!! It WON"T fix errors, just boots up. Boots up after
that fine. Help please any ideas??

Why would you not direct this question to the makers of the program
(Piriform?) that was the proximate cause of your problem? How much
space did the Piriform program itself take up?

And why wouldn't you simply use Vista's built-in defragmentation
capability, which is more than adequate for most users' needs?
