help! weird screen font display

Friend's computer, helping install XP Home. All okay,
downloaded updates, ran programs. Then on a reboot the
Welcome screen came up with strange unreadable symbols
instead of letters. Same symbols for icon labels on
desktop. Same in most but not all dialog boxes. Looks
like maybe a symbol font was substituted for Tahoma.
Can't change fonts because desktop properties dialogs are
so skewed. Maybe can do so with hard copy of correct
dialog box for a guide. Obviously not writing this from
friend's computer. It's worthless until fix found.
Suggestions or comments? Thanks!

Hi JimP,

I've heard of Spanish versions of Windows XP that got corrupted with
the Catalan language due to the latest update. Something similar
happened to you.

The solution is using a Restore point previous to applying the update.
Failing that, you can manually uninstall the guilty update, though
using the restore system is much better.

Hope this helps.
