Your XP Product Key is usually on a sticker on your computer tower or bottom
of a laptop.

I assume you mean the "Product Key." If it's not on a sticker on
the case, you can find the Product key with any of these:

ViewKeyXP www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/ViewKeyXP.exe (for Retail
versions only, and for pre-SP2 versions only)

AIDA32 http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm

Everest http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?page=product&view=1

Magical Jellybean www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Belarc Advisor scans your system and returns information including the cd-keys to
any and all software on your machine, including the Windows CD-key.

The Windows 25-character Product Key (required to perform the
installation) is stored on the CD packaging on a bright orange sticker
that says "Do not lose this number." It is not on the installation CD
in any way, shape, or form. If it was an OEM (factory installed)
license, it's stored on a label that the PC manufacturer affixed to
the exterior of the PC case, or on the bottom of a laptop.

To recover a lost Product Key:

If your system still runs, you should be able to use Belarc
Advisor from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html to find the
Product Key. (If you have a factory-installed OEM license, and
haven't since reinstalled the OS, the revealed Product Key is probably
of the drive image used at the factory and not your specific Product
Key; therefore, it probably cannot be -- and definitely should not
be -- used for a re-installation.)

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;326246

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of
the Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy
a new license.

Thank you all very much for all the help. A friend of mine put the computer
together for me and I do have the OEM version.

Thanks again

If you mean your installation key, there are a number of programs
which will get it IF YOU ALREADY HAVE XP INSTALLED.

I have one from Russia called ViewHeadXP which is all of 32768 BYTES
uncompressed. You can probably find a current download on Google. Scan
it with a virus checker if you don't know the download site.

Belarc Advisor, a free systems information utility (meant to sell you
their fancier programs) includes serials for some of your installed
software including the serial and installation key for XP.

(The serial is in regedt32.exe:

view the value of:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\ProductID
)

If XP is still running, just right click on the My Computer icon and g
to "properties", you should see your registered serial number there.

On mine, it isn't the same as the install key; is the "serial number"
the altered key by SP1? I didn't register my winxp pro......
What is the number?
