Help w/DVD burning

Don't know where to ask but...
recently my DVD burning is taking about 3x times longer to complete.
the drive burns for 3 seconds then is off for about 6 seconds.
the reuslt is a burn which takes 1:30 hours instead of 30 min.
it is burning at 8x.
there are things running in background but nothing that appears to be
active during this time.
I will shut everything down and try again, but maybe someone know
something so I won't have to experiment to find it.
XP SP2 with all updates

Plextor drive
firewall
antivirus
most everything that is running was running when it worked properly.

This is just a shot in the dark but if your version of Nero is the early one
I know that many people have had problems with it, it was rushed out before
all the bugs had been ironed out. I understand there is a free update that
you can download from their website. You could try that, or uninstall Nero
(if you have the install disk should you want to reinstall it) and download
one of several free DVD burning programs and try that. If an alternative
program works fine then that points to Nero being the culprit. Good luck.

there is lack of customer feedback required to improve their products.

My geuss would be that your drive is stuck in PIO mode....it happens.
