I was stupid enough to trust Microsoft Upgrade and didn't do any
backup prior to the update.

Where can I find the files and restore them back?

Yes, I have a legal license for Vista, but have yet to activate it. Do
I need to activate it immediately?

Easiest thing would be to scan your C-drive for "Outlook Express" (without
the quotes). You should find some EML files I think. Once you've got those,
you should be able to import them into Windows Mail. Be sure to search
hidden and system folders.

C:\Documents and Settings\your user\App Data\Local\Microsoft\Outlook Express

John, thanks for the answer, but unfortunately the only EML file that
I can find in my harddisk are all after the upgrade. It seems like I
lost all my email.

All my installed programs as well as Drivers are still there, but
everthing personal had been gone, except the User Name and login
account :(

I am very dissapointed with this Ultimate update :(

check in a folder called Windows.old at the root of the C drive, have you
attempted repairing the installation?

OMG. I finally know what the issue is :(

If you have UNICODE in your Path, chances are you will loose all your
data.

vista Ultimate is also stupid enough that if I have UNICODE in my
path, I can launch any installation package from there :(

Vista is STILL BUGGY

Well first there is not Outlook Express in Vista. It is just Windows Mail.
So how you are running OE is beyond me. 2nd there is no Operating System
out there that isnt buggy. OS X applies patches all the time. As do Linux
distros. Id you are looking for a bug free OS you wont find it.

Ok it is Windows Mail. I just too used to call it OE.

Linux is Free, and Vista is not. I am paying specifically for the
upgrade (from home basic to ultimate), and the supose easy upgrade
anytime is causing me BIG trouble...... That is why I am very
dissapointed.

If Vista doesn't know what to do with my fiels without Unicode. Why
can't it is leave it there. At least I have a way to resotre. Instead
of deletign everything for me :(
