Help! upgrade problem

After running Windows XP professional upgrade from Windows ME, every
application, except IE, fails to start ! Nortron Antivirus, HP Psc
printer/scanner, Netscape, Opera, ...etc. They either cannot be started
at all or default setting is lost even it can be started. Is this
Microsoft's intention to ask user to reinstall everythings after upgrade
? Or there is some setting I have missed ? Could anyone help me on
that ? May be I should give up the upgrade and resume to Windows ME ??

That was a mistake. I always go for the clean install. Always. What
little time you think you're saving generally turns into a bit of a
horror show.

No, XP is far and away better than ME. ME was quite a crappy OS version.
Backup your data (which you should have done already, before you tried
the upgrade) and perform a clean install. If you have an upgrade version
that will only upgrade, not clean install, it should work as long as you
insert the WinME cdrom in the drive at some point. I'm not sure of the
particulars about that bit of the procedure.

And even MS office, Word and Excel, cannot open any files !

Check and make sure that the account you're trying to use has
administrator privileges. If not, try again with an administrator
account and see what happens.

Thanks for your trying to help.
I checked the user is at administrator privileges.

Since I got only an upgrade license, so I have no other way round!
It seems that XP map or modify the "My Document" into "user/My
Document". So every program that have start up information stored in "My
Document" fail. This is my guess only.
Meanwhile, I am busy in installing all application again !

Well, you can still do a clean installation, which is what I'd
recommend. You have to reinstall all the programs anyway, so what have
you got to lose? This way, you'll not have to put up with any WinME
remnants. Here's a website to start you out:

well i know that running an upgrade and not a full install from ME to XP
mostly always causes problems... did u run the compatability test on the xp
install cd.. it will tell u what hardware\software will have issues. the
test should have been ran before u installed xp though.
Customers always wanted up to upgrade.. not reload hard drive.. and 68% of
the time... it fails. with many different issues,, like yours.. or
bluescreen crashes.. IRQ less than issues ect..

Best bet is to F-disk, Format.. Reload

Using the Upgrade function to move from Win Me to XP is considered far more
unstable a process (as you've seen) than correctly reformatting the
harddrive and doing a clean install of XP Pro.
