Help I am at my wits end my girlfriend has a IBM thinkpad T21 running windows
XP pro, she said that it wouldnt boot up it keeps going to
*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80E94E30, 0xc0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_DEVICE

I have tried to boot off the windows xp cd but to no joy, it starts to boot
up in safe mode but hangs on agp440.sys then goes to the blue screen :-(

As it wont let me get in on any safe mode I don't know what else there is.
I cannot make head nor tail out of it and its driving me mad now, the nail
in the coffin i feel is that the laptop doesnt have a floppy drive.
No new software was installed nor any hardware changes made. I really need
to some how get on to the hard drive as my girlfriend had a lot of work she
hadn't backed up on it.

thanks

Wow that is really something. I suggest above all that you contact IBM tech
support, and then MS tech support if that fails as if you can not boot from
the XP cd there is something seriously wrong. Maybe take it to a local
computer shop and they can see what to do.

If you can try to boot from the cd again have a go at running the repair
option (if it hangs just leave it overnight, see what happens)

THE REPAIR CONSOLE

This method will reinstall Windows XP, and delete all drivers and windows
updates, BUT IT WILL NOT DELETE YOUR PROGRAMS OR FILES!

To use it you need to insert your Windows XP CD, and then restart your
computer. Then when the boot screen comes up, click ‘boot from cd’ and once
the XP cd has loaded, select the repair console.

Here are some websites that describe the process
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/EN-US/ Please not this is very detailed
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm this is quite a good
step by step guide which I recommend printing off and looking at while doing
your first repair

Do not worry. Repairs are very easy, but afterwards you will need to
reinstall drivers, and run Windows Update.

I hope that helps although if you can not even access any part of the
computer there is little anyone on here can do

Oh good point. The best program i have found for file recovery is called
R-studio 2.0 ... for me none of the other programs worked, but that saved my
life

'"STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Error Message When You
Restart Your Computer or Upgrade to Windows XP'
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q297185

Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot
into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console.

At the prompt, type the following command: chkdsk X: /f

Replace X: with the letter of your system drive.

This will go into the File System and repair the damage that caused the
BSOD.

Once it is complete, reboot your system as normal and it should come
back to life.

Is she likely to change her ways after this wake-up call?

All Magnetic media has the potential to work like "Disappearing
Ink". One day it's there, the next day it isn't. A copy of important
data is critical. An image of the setup it resides on is also critical.
Unfortunately, a large % of PC user's do not understand that data
on a disk drive is anything but permanent.
Even CD-R/DVD-R disks have a rather short life span compared
to "Good Ole" Paper and manila Folders.
It would be interesting to see how in the year 2025 all this digital
data survives or is stored/retrieved.
Even today, some things I store digitally I occasionally print out
and file away.

Well said. Many users choose to ignore what you say until
disaster strikes. They prefer to learn the hard way.

If the O/P inserts the XP CD, and the computer starts up in safe mode, he is
NOT booting from the CD. He has to go into the computer bios and adjust is
as such. Of course, the O/P may not, in fact, have a bootable XP CD. I don't
know what Toshiba provides.
