help troubleshooting 2 problems

Hi-
Recently, my computer began to exhibit the following two problems:

1) About 50% of the time, after I turn on the computer and log into my
XP account, I immediately receive the following error message:

An exception occurred while trying to run
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup".

After I click OK, the computer seems to function smoothly.

2) When I try to turn off the computer (Start > Turn Off Computer >
Turn Off), my computer almost freezes, and I end up having to manually
unpower it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The following is my Hijackthis

NvCpl.dll is related to nVidia software for the control panel. Try
uninstalling then reinstalling it.
