Help to install an additional(operational) hard drive to a computer

Recently I purchased a new computer as a gift for my mother. Instead
of transferring the data from old computer to new I'd like to add the
hard drive instead.

My question is this. After I install the old hard drive and leave the new
one set as the boot device can I still expect to call data from the
old drive? Are there any other actions I should take?

Hopefully my question is clear. Thanks in advance.

Hi, Ciscolo. You are a good son. ;-) You apparently already know how to
slave the old hard drive in the new machine (watch your jumper
settings!). You won't be able to run the programs that are on the old
drive, but you'll be able to access the data. However, I think the
cleanest solution is to slave the drive, copy the data to My Documents
or wherever you like on the new drive, and then format the old drive to
use as additional space, backup, whatever. I personally like all my
computers to have a second hard drive and instead of keeping things in
My Documents on c:, I like to keep data on that second drive. I usually
like to make a Ghost image of the new installation, too, for easy
repair, but that may be overkill for you. I do like the second drive
though because if Windows gets messed up or you want to upgrade or
whatever, your data is separate and it isn't such a big deal.

Your mother is fortunate,

Malke

Yes. Assuming that the jumpers are set properly, the drive should
be fine.
