Help! TARFU @ the IE6 FAQ. Where is Keith Miller?

C

clintonG

I want a configuration that will sort Favorites automatically. The IE6 FAQ
[1] has what appears to be a viable solution but as written it is rfu. I
hope somebody has figured this out. I'll even re-write the corrected
instruction lucidly and -- correctly -- but I don't know how to respond to
the mistaken instructions in the FAQ and as it turns out the FAQ is not a
blog where comments for corrections can be posted.

As this FAQ item is rather short I'll recreate it here verbatim and hope
somebody can instruct me correctly...

<START />

Sorting the Favorites automatically "on-the-fly" - Windows XP

Thanks to Keith Miller for this tip [in the Windows XP Newsgroup]

If you want the Favorites to automatically alpha-sort even as new entries
are added, you need a registry edit. Navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Menu
Order\Favorites]

Delete the value named 'Order'. Also delete this value for any subfolders.
Then, with the favorite key highlighted, click on Edit > 'Permissions...' ->
'Advanced' -> 'Add' -> type your username in the 'Select User or Group Box'
and then deny 'Set Value' permissions to yourself. This will prevent IE from
recreating the 'order' value and it will default to alpha sort. This will
prevent the key from being automatically recreated.

The same technique works for Windows XP Start Menu Programs as well. But the
registry key is different in that case.

For XP Start menu:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start
Menu2\Programs]

For Classic Start Menu:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start
Menu\Programs]

<END />

Okay, the instructions break down when stating "type your username in the
'Select User or Group Box' and then deny 'Set Value' permissions to
yourself."

On my XP Pro SP2 machine there is no such label for any textbox and thus no
observable way to set value permissions for myself.

Does anybody have a correct instruction?

I'm right here :)

You get "Permissions for Favorites" dialog, with a single tab labeled "Security", right?

Click the "Advanced" button, a second dialog, "Advanced Security Settings for Favorites" should
appear with four tabs: 'Permissions', 'Auditing', 'Owner', 'Effective Permissions'.

On the 'Permissions' tab, click the 'Add...' button.

A third dialog should appear, labeled 'Select User or Group'. The cursor should be in a textbox
with the label 'Enter the object name to select (examples)'. This is the textbox where you should
enter your user name & then click 'OK'. That should launch a final dialog labeled 'Permission Entry
for Favorites' when you can check 'Deny' for the 'Set Value' permission.

Sorry for the shorthand in my original post where I referred to a dialog as a 'box', I didn't know
it was going to be archived for posterity :)

I created a test folder and it did originally have a weird placement in the Favorites drop-list on
the menu. Opening the Favorites pane via the toolbar showed the folder auto-sorted properly.
Closing & reopening IE put the folder in its correct position in the drop-list. So apparently IE
had some sort order in memory. But as long as the 'Order' value under Favorites is not being
recreated, Favorites will alpha-sort.

Nope. No presence of order.

BTW -- when I implemeted a sorting solution on my last machine the Favorites
key had a dozen or so folder entries for various Favorites. I recall
deleting those entries and there was no problem. This time around I observed
the same thing. I thought holy hell I have to go through several dozen
folder entries to delete an order value? So I deleted the entries. Of the
many many dozens of folders for Favorites I have created and accumulated
several folder entries have reappeared in the key. No order is present for
them either.

I have created and accumulated 37,646 Favorites. Holy Moley :)

Correction. I did not drill down deep enough. The order has in fact
reappeared deep into the listed folder hierarchy of the Favorites key but it
does not appear for the Favorite key itself.

I checked the Advanced Security Settings > Permission tab entry and it is

Each 'Order' value holds the sort order for the folder corresponding to the key which contains that
'Order' value. So the value you found would only affect its folder.

You can delete all the subkeys of Favorites (or delete & recreate Favorites itself) then deny both
'Set Value' and 'Create Subkey' permissions -- this should keep the registry cleaner.

I do see the fluke in the TEMPORARY sorting of newly created folders in the drop-menu and don't know
a fix for that. It doesn't seem to affect the favorites pane, nor does it affect newly-added sites,
they are sorted properly immediately.

Correction. I did not drill down deep enough. The order has in fact reappeared deep into the
listed folder hierarchy of the Favorites key but it does not appear for the Favorite key itself.

I checked the Advanced Security Settings > Permission tab entry and it is marked "Deny" for my
user name.

I created a test folder and it did originally have a weird placement in the Favorites drop-list

Closing & reopening IE put the folder in its correct position in the drop-list. So apparently IE
had some sort order in memory. But as long as the 'Order' value under Favorites is not being
recreated, Favorites will alpha-sort.

Thanks for showing up Keith. Your method sounded right on. After following your instructions I
create a folder in Favorites called DelMe but it still doesn't sort alphabetically -- stays put
as the last folder.

I found and implementing a slightly different method on a previous install but the aliens ate
the instructions so I'm out looking for a solution again.

I'm right here :)

You get "Permissions for Favorites" dialog, with a single tab labeled "Security", right?

Click the "Advanced" button, a second dialog, "Advanced Security Settings for Favorites"
should appear with four tabs: 'Permissions', 'Auditing', 'Owner', 'Effective Permissions'.

On the 'Permissions' tab, click the 'Add...' button.

A third dialog should appear, labeled 'Select User or Group'. The cursor should be in a
textbox with the label 'Enter the object name to select (examples)'. This is the textbox
where you should enter your user name & then click 'OK'. That should launch a final dialog
labeled 'Permission Entry for Favorites' when you can check 'Deny' for the 'Set Value'
permission.

Sorry for the shorthand in my original post where I referred to a dialog as a 'box', I didn't
know it was going to be archived for posterity :)

I want a configuration that will sort Favorites automatically. The IE6 FAQ [1] has what
appears to be a viable solution but as written it is rfu. I hope somebody has figured this
out. I'll even re-write the corrected instruction lucidly and -- correctly -- but I don't know
how to respond to the mistaken instructions in the FAQ and as it turns out the FAQ is not a
blog where comments for corrections can be posted.

As this FAQ item is rather short I'll recreate it here verbatim and hope somebody can
instruct me correctly...

<START />

Sorting the Favorites automatically "on-the-fly" - Windows XP

Thanks to Keith Miller for this tip [in the Windows XP Newsgroup]

If you want the Favorites to automatically alpha-sort even as new entries are added, you need
a registry edit. Navigate to:

[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Menu Order\Favorites]

Delete the value named 'Order'. Also delete this value for any subfolders. Then, with the
favorite key highlighted, click on Edit > 'Permissions...' -> 'Advanced' -> 'Add' -> type
your username in the 'Select User or Group Box' and then deny 'Set Value' permissions to
yourself. This will prevent IE from recreating the 'order' value and it will default to alpha
sort. This will prevent the key from being automatically recreated.

The same technique works for Windows XP Start Menu Programs as well. But the registry key is
different in that case.

For XP Start menu:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu2\Programs]

For Classic Start Menu:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Start Menu\Programs]

<END />

Okay, the instructions break down when stating "type your username in the 'Select User or
Group Box' and then deny 'Set Value' permissions to yourself."

On my XP Pro SP2 machine there is no such label for any textbox and thus no observable way to
set value permissions for myself.

Does anybody have a correct instruction?

I deleted everything including the Favorites key. Recreated the Favorites
key and using your earlier instructions denied Set Value and Create SubKey
permissions. Success! Thank you for hanging in there.
