HELP Suddenly can't sign in to this on most computers

Hello,

I hope someone else has experienced this problem before. On most computers
that I use up until recently I was able to sign in here, go to whatever
newsgroup I wanted and searched for threads and post and get answers fairly
quickly.

Now suddenly my browser has "Error on page" in the lower left corner, and
when I press the sign in button it doesn't do anything. This goes for the
edit profile and even the help button.

I sent an inquiry to Microsoft, and they're telling me that I have to go
through all this configure subscriptions ...... but that only seems to be
for news "Letters" not being able to participate in this forum. They go on
to say I have to configure a NNTP browser etc... etc... etc...

Having done all of that, whenever I FINALLY get back here I get the same
thing. I'm on someone elses computer and am able to access this the same way
I have always done, yet find no differences in my browser configuration.

All machines I'm using are Windows XP SP2 machines, P4 using IE6 SP2.

I have a link on my computer in my favorites to this part of the site,
Microsoft states that my link isn't working properly, yet even if I hand type

www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/default.mspx like I did on
this machine I get the error that not only prevents me from being able to
sign in, but when I click on a thread all I get is an empty box not allowing
me to see the content of the post.

This has been very frustrating for me as I have actively been participating
in these posts for years.

I have tried getting rid of all cookies, history and temp files in addition
to all that "Managed Newsgroups" configuration and it's not getting me
anywhere.

I have other questions to post, but want to be able to do it from my own
computer again. What am I missing?

Sorry but you probably won't get much help on this here. The basic problem
is you're using the web interface to access what are actually Usenet
newsgroups. The web interface is lousy, and you are seeing one
manifestation of that. I suggest you use a newsreader to access these
newsgroups. XP comes with Outlook Express which can be configured for
newsgroup access. Here is a link with info on how to set up OE. There are
other newsgroup readers available besides OE.

As an alternative for web access use Google Groups, and by far the best
means of searching for past posts is to use Google Groups Advanced Search.
This newsgroup is microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

I'm not sure how well outlook express is going to work as I'm using Outlook
for my email. If my memory serves me well, in the past those 2 programs
don't play too well together.

I'll give it a try, I just hope it doesn't create other problems. I spend
so much of my time solving my users problems, for some reason I hate working

Yeah but when you get things settled like a good means to access newsgroups,
it helps in making the effort to solve other's problems easier. Outlook
uses outlook express for access to newsgroups. There are other newsreaders
besides OE, too. But once you get one set up, it will take away all the
problems with the web interface. I can't speak to any problems between
Outlook and Outlook Express. I don't use Outlook. There are specific
newsgroups for both of them.

Start a new shortcut and use this for the location of the program.
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly

This will start OE as a newsreader without email accounts and a Inbox.

Outlook uses Outlook Express as a newsreader. There is no newsreader within
Outlook.

Nope, using both Outlook and Outlook Express is not a problem at all.
Anybody who uses Outlook for E-mail either uses Outlook Express for a
newsreader or some other third-party newsreader program. As a matter of
fact, most Outlook users use Outlook Express as their newsreader, because
that's what Outlook gives you by default.

I've done exactly this for many years, and I know many others who have done
the same.
