I just got a new laptop with Windows XP installed. It has
a C:\ drive and all space is allocated to it. I would
like to split the C:\ drive into 2 separate drives, C:\
and D:\, but have no idea how. I have looked at the Disk
Management tool, but can't seem to figure things out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

One partitioning tool that I have used is Partition Magic
for years now, only lost two partitions one I got back
using nortion utilities, the othe I didn't care about.

This will repartition resize and convert partitions
without formatting the drive.

As the book says backup important files.

You will need to purchase/get hold of a copy of Partition
Magic (from memory I believe version 7 onwards in
compatible with Windows XP but this is worth checking.
The current version is 8).

As I understand it the only way to achieve what you want
with what you currently have is to reformat your drive
from scratch and partition usingthe Windows XP CD which is
probably not an attractive proposition.

Regards
AC

You will need to use third party partitioning software, unless your laptop
came an XP CD and not just restore disks or hard drive restore partition or
folder. You should also be aware if you need to restore your laptop with the
restore media, make sure it does not return the hard drive back to the
original configuration.

This needs third party software - one is Partition Magic ver 8; the one
I would use, though a *little* less easy is BootIT NG, from
http://www.BootitNG.com ($35 shareware - 30 day full functional trial)

Download, to its own folder, extract from the zip, run the bootitng.exe
to make a boot floppy.

Boot the floppy, Cancel Install, entering maintenance, then click on
Partition work. Highlight your C:, - which will be the only partition
showing - and click Resize. Choose the size you want and OK.

Then exit, reboot XP and you can in Disk Management look at the graphic
of the disk, bottom right, r-click the now 'Unallocated space' and
'Create partition, carrying on to Format it
