Help should tell me how to save files to a jump drive

I have a jump drive that is simply suppose to be inserted into a USB port and
files can be downloaded to it. I did not know how to do this and I could not
find info in the help files for jump drives (unless it is called something
else). I have Windows XP and a Lexar Jump Drive. I love the help files and
use them all the time, but for this particular instance I could find no help.

I love my USB drive, too! I've found two pretty simple ways to copy the
files onto mine.

One, I open the document & use File --> Save As & select the drive from the
drop-down.

Two, I will go through My Computer to open the drive, then I will open My
Documents (or wherever the file is stored) & copy & paste the file to the
drive window. This is my favorite way because I'm a very visual person &
it's easier for me to see the drive as its own window.

One other thing, sometimes Windows will have to install the drive, and
usually you'll get a sequence of balloons telling you that it has found new
hardware, is installing new hardware, and that the new hardware is ready to
be used.

Although it's sometimes used in a generic way, "JumpDrive" is a registered
trademark of Lexar. The things are more properly called USB drives or flash
memory drives (and see

In any case, Office help should *not* give instructions for saving documents
to USB drives or any other removable media, because that's a very risky
practice. You risk a corrupted document that may be completely unreadable.
In some cases you risk making the entire disk or drive unreadable.

Save your document to the hard drive. After the document is closed, use
Windows Explorer to copy the file to the USB drive, CD-RW, floppy, or other
removable media.

Also, never open a document directly from removable media for editing. Copy
the file to the hard drive, work on it there, and then copy the finished
file back to the removable media.

Pay close attention to what Jay has told you, but note that when you plug in
the USB drive, it acquires a drive letter like any other drive (hard drive,
CD drive, floppy drive), and you just select that drive to save or copy to.
