Help required re non starting Windows XP

Help!!
I’m not very technically minded when it comes to PCs so can I initially ask
readers of this enquiry to excuse my ignorance!

I run Windows XP on my home PC and have all the necessary updates installed
I recently installed AVAST Anti virus as a replacement for Symantec. I got a
message about one or two Trojan viruses and moved them to the virus chest
until I had time to deal with them

Yesterday I went through the process of disabling System Restore and then
used System Reconfiguration before attempting to start up in Safe mode, as I
intended to check again for viruses.

But when I attempted to start up in Safe Mode I keep getting the message
below. I’ve tried several times to start up using all of the options below
without success. I’ve also tried using F8 without success. It keeps going
through the same automatic process of trying to Start up Windows normally
without success

I am now stuck as to what to do next and would appreciate any guidance??

Note:
1) as far as I can recall I did not install the Recovery Console for Windows
XP
2) I have recently installed some new programmes, (including iTunes) but
never had any problem starting up until I went through the System Restore/
System Reconfigure process

Many thanks in anticipation

During the boot process, hit F8 repeatedly till you get the safe mode menu. It's a timing thing.

Many thanks for your response Mark
I tried this and did manage to get to the Windows Advanced Options menu with
the words Safe Mode in blue at the bottom of the screen. But when I try to
get into Safe Mode it doesn't happen for me and the PC just starts to go
through the process again.
I've read some of the posts and technical briefs on this website and am
still confused
Should I now cosnider installing the Windows Recovery Console as described

thanks

I see no plan for using Recovery Console for anything. An Upgrade or Recovery setup is more likely to help.

I tried using the Windows XP CD to do the repair as set out in the Article.
Got a far as Step 6 but after Windows copied the files, I got the following
message. I have tried using the CD again, and rebooting in Safe Mode/Last
Known Good Cofigration but keep getting the following blue screen.
I have not tried to disable BIOS caching or memory as I am a bit reluctant
to start this given that I am not a technical PC person (i'm using a Dell
4100)

Help. Is there any other procedure I can try before calling in the experts????

If this is the first time you’ve seen this Stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps

Check to ensure that any new hardware or software is properly installed. If
this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any
new Windows updates you may need

If problems continue disable or remove any new hardware or software
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your
PC, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select SAFE mode

You are setting out on a very technical repair job, and if you are not able to do it, you should find local assistance that is. Some
driver was probably damaged by the virus or spyware you have recently removed.

Your best solution, without professional help, is probably a fresh reinstall of the system, rather than trying a repair.

Many thanks for your helpful comments, I will endeavour to get local assistance

By the way, if I did try to do a fresh install of Windows, what would be the
overall impact, as opposted to trying to do a repair? eg would all other
programmes etc such as printers, scanners, music players etc need to be
reinstalled?

Yes, you would need to start over. A repair would preserve the registry, but that might also retain your errors.
